Employees at the West Virginia Braskem America’s Neal plant took the opposite approach many of us have taken, they’re living at work to keep production going. Over 40 employees are participating in a “live-in” work situation at the medical supplies production plant.

Gerard McGuigan, Braskem America public relations associate, shared, “The need for essential medical supplies to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 is at an all-time high — Braskem has a dedicated Resiliency Response Team of 42 employees who have been living 24/7 on the premises of its Neal polypropylene (PP) production plant since March 31.”

The company is working on raw materials for medical supplies manufacturing companies, including those that make respiratory masks and protective medical equipment. Employees work 12-hour shifts but remain at the planet the rest of the time. To keep each member healthy, the employees will stay at the factory until April 28 to make sure none of them get sick.

A Braskem plant in Pennsylvania is following a similar system. Braskem’s CEO said that employees volunteered to meet customer demand for items. “We were just happy to be able to help,” Joe Boyce, operations shift supervisor, said. “We’ve been getting messages on social media from nurses, doctors, EMS workers, saying thank you for what we’re doing. But we want to thank them for what they did and are continuing to do. That’s what made the time we were in there go by quickly, just being able to support them.”
