Several hundred thousand years ago, a flock of rails flew to an atoll in the Indian Ocean and eventually evolved to being flightless. After the island was wiped out by flooding, the birds became extinct. However, in the thousands of years since, the island, Aldabra, resurfaced and a new batch of rails colonized the island and they too became flightless over many, many generations.
