CANTON — SUNY Canton’s weeklong Scholarly Activities Celebration will feature a SUNY Canton alumnus who is a world-renowned leader in sports nutrition and two natural medicine experts.

Dan Benardot, who graduated from SUNY Canton in 1968, will give a talk on how nutrition strategies designed for professional athletes can be used by anyone looking to maximize their health and fitness. Mr. Benardot was the nutritionist for the Atlanta Falcons from 2014 to 2017, as well as for the 1996 Olympic gold-medal-winning USA Gymnastics team. He has also written several books, including “Advanced Sports Nutrition” and “Nutrition for Exercise Science.” Mr. Benardot is a professor emeritus at Georgia State University and visiting professor at Emory University’s Center for the Study of Human Health.

Mr. Benardot will give his keynote speech at 5 p.m. on April 15 in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center’s Kingston Theater.

The event is co-sponsored by the Canton College Foundation, the Northern New York Chapter of the American Chemical Society, Nature’s Storehouse and the Potsdam Food Co-op and is open to the public. Those interested can find out more or register at http://www.canton.edu/natural.

Also that week will be the college’s third annual Symposium on Natural Medicines from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 13, in Payson Hall, Room 219.

Those who attend will be able to participate in a plant identification lesson, smoothie tastings and trivia contest. Michael B. Burgess, an assistant professor at SUNY Plattsburgh, and Ryan Bradley, from the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, Ore., will discuss ancient remedies and the benefits of antioxidants.

On April 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Southworth Library Learning Commons, SUNY Canton students and faculty will present their research projects. Oral presentations will then be given from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Cook Hall, rooms 200 and 201. Topics will include an analysis of whether electromagnetic radiation exposure from hybrid vehicles poses a health risk, the relationship between artificial photosynthesis and sustainable energy and the role of health care professionals to assist human trafficking victims.

On April 16, 17 and 18, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Roos House Convocation, Athletic and Recreation Center, the Graphic and Multimedia Design program will host a senior exhibit of students’ artwork. Then, on April 18 in the Miller Campus Center, rooms 218-220, artwork from students enrolled in the professional practices course will be presented.

All events are free and open to the public.
