Over 50,000 people in the United States have died of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, according to multiple news reports.
Experts have also said that the reported deaths from coronavirus is probably higher than the number that have died from the virus. California coroners said that a woman in Santa Clara died from the virus February 6, revising her cause of death. Daily deaths and infection rates continue to rise in the United States, with more than 870,000 having the virus as of April 24, then the country hit the grim 50,000 deaths toll.
According to the Hill, by the middle of the last week of April, the death toll is expected to pass the number of Americans who died in the Vietnam war. The United States now has the highest death toll and case count in the world, while the White House is emphasizing the fact that the mortality rate in the United States is lower than in many European countries.
Vice President Mike Pence announced that the United States had conducted 4.9 million tests. The testing rate is woefully inadequate for the 300 million population size of the country. As of April 24, when the United States passed 50,000 deaths, the global figures were 190,000 confirmed deaths from the virus, with 2.7 million reported infections.
