The following Q&A introduces Dr. Gaddam.

What would a typical first visit with you be like?

Each person’s health is unique to them and to their total life circumstances. We are all developments of every influence in our life, including the full range of physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual and environmental. It is important to me to put each patient at the center of their care and each person who comes to see me receives a personalized care protocol for their needs and circumstances. I see the first visit is the first opportunity to learn who the patient is and what circumstances have shaped the present health conditions.

What I’m saying is, each patient receives a unique integrative medical approach that combines naturopathic medicine, western medicine, biofeedback, homeopathic and herbal remedies, and leading treatments that are supported by research and science.

My professional life is dedicated to education and research, and applying those results to better health for my patients and create a healing environment that strengthens the body’s own healing ability.

What are some of the most rewarding research projects you have conducted?

That’s difficult to answer. There are so many, each with its own value that I feel very passionate about. What comes immediately to mind is my research into integrative naturopathic oncology that led to both of my current positions as Director of Integrative Oncology at the Comprehensive Blood and Cancer Center in Bakersfield and at Salus Integrative Medicine in Paso Robles.

My early oncology research was with weight loss in cancer patients and quality of life during patient care. I was the principal investigator for a clinical trial about the effect of E2 energy on Cancer Cachexia that was conducted at the Comprehensive Blood and Cancer Center. It was a successful trial and the American Society of Clinical Oncology will be publishing the results of the trial in the coming months.

While I was head of research for Ayush Herbs, my research there contributed to the company’s formulation of nutraceuticals for their products. I currently also sit on the Board of Directors for Youveda LLC and am a co-formulator for their products.

How did your education and training prepare you for these research projects?

I believe in ongoing education and research, which my educational record demonstrates. If you want to go all the way back, my medical training started at Bharatividyapeeth University Hospital in India. My focus at that time was compiling data and the results we had from using naturopathic approaches in treating various illnesses. It is very hard to find credible evidence-based research in the field and that motivated me to help create a platform so we could compile case histories and share the information among the practitioners.

What motivated you to study at Bastyr University?

Bastyr is a world-renowned education institute for Naturopathic medicine. Bastyr also has a strong research department and had conducted many clinical trials that I was very interested in at that time. It was natural fit for me to further my education with them. During my course of studies at Bastyr University, I also finished my certification in Biofeedback.

What was your early motivation for becoming a doctor?

I always had a strong desire to contribute to society. My parents were strong motivators for me to continue on to become a doctor. I like working with people and help them as much as I can. I also love teaching, which made the decision to become a doctor much easier.

What would you say you are the most passionate about when it comes to medicine?

Affordable health care and proper healthcare; I am very passionate about making health care available to everyone.
