On the occasion of International Human Rights Day a National Seminar titled, ‘Mob Lynching and Vigilantism: A Human Rights Perspective’ was organised by the Centre for Human Rights and Subaltern Studies of National University of Study and Research in Law, Ranchi on December 10. The event was graced with the presence of ADG, Raj Kumar Mallick, Advocate Lal Arvind Kumar Sahdev and Raswet Shrinkhal, Assistant Professor Central University of Jharkhand as the panelists and was also chaired by the Vice Chancellor of NUSRL, Ranchi Dr. Kesava Rao Vurrakulla and Dr. Subir Kumar, the Faculty Convenor of the Canter.

The event began with the inaugural address of the Vice Chancellor and release of the book containing the seminar proceedings edited by Dr. Gunjan and Dr. Subir Kumar. Further the experts began with their expositions and threw light upon the various dimensions of Mob Lynching and Vigilantism prevalent in different parts of the country and expressed their dissatisfaction and concern over the people who are taking law and the judicial system in their own hands and are acting in total abeyance to the rule of law and the provisions inscribed in the Constitution of India.

RK Mallick though highlighted this fact that there is a want of a legislation specifically dealing in this context and also stated about the difficulties faced by the investigating agencies in getting reliable witnesses in order to get hold of the culprits but still he insisted the people to have faith upon the Police and the justice system.

Advocate Lal Arvind Kumar Sahdeo acquainted the gathering with his personal experiences of dealing with the cases of Mob Lynching and even dealt with various provisions of law involved in the adjudication of such crimes. The last panellist Professor Shrinkhal continued the discussion by dealing with the origin of the concept of Mob Lynching and informed the audiences about the root causes that led to these heinous offences. The event further progressed with the presentation of research papers of students and scholars throughout the country under the evaluation of Dr. Rabindra Kumar Pathak and Dr. Biswanath Gupta, both being the faculty members of NUSRL.

Another seminar and workshop Titled “Non-Violent Communication in the Judicial System” started with the address of Dr. Manju Agarwal, who enlightened the students in naturopathy, where she demonstrated various asanas to deal with certain everyday issues. She even dealt with five elements of nature. Dr. Ved Vyas Kundu gave a comprehensive lecture about the application of Gandhian Principles in the field of law. He added that these principles are quite significantly applicable in the emerging field of Alternate Dispute Resolution in law. Then DrVed Vyas Kundu address the students on Gandhian principles and various aspects of it. After sharing his precious knowledge with the students, Dipankar Shri Gyan took the charge and enlightened the students on the same.
